M.B., Ch.B. — CUHK Major Requirements (2026–27)

Faculty: Medicine · Admission code: MEDUN · For students admitted in 2026–27

The Medicine Programme is a six-year undergraduate professional programme that aims to prepare students for medical internship and life-long career as medical practitioners. Medical students have to complete the prescribed course of studies and examinations each year before they can be promoted to the following year.

Besides the essential medical knowledge and skills, the curriculum puts equal emphasis on medical professionalism, bioethics and communication skills. These topics are covered through interactive teaching and learning across all years of the programme.

Students learn a wide range of biomedical knowledge and its clinical application in the first three years. They have clinical contact including structured practical sessions in the clinical skills laboratory and clinical rotations to various disciplines.

In the clinical years, students acquire clinical competence through participation in the work of clinical teams in delivering day-to-day care of patients.

Medical students are required to pass all the Professional Examinations and periodic assessments of individual courses and modules for conferment of the MBChB Degrees.

Graduates are required to complete one-year of internship at recognized hospitals before they are qualified to apply for registration as a medical doctor in Hong Kong.

Students are required to complete 11 units of Faculty Package and required courses as follows:

3.MBChB Global Physician-Leadership Stream (GPS)

All GPS students have to complete the study scheme prescribed above and the following courses:

(1)

GPS students admitted in Medicine Year One or Medicine Year Two are required to complete satisfactorily GPS Leadership Workshop Series I (GPSU2000), GPS Leadership Workshop Series IIA (GPSU3000), GPS Leadership Workshop Series IIB (GPSU4000) and GPS Leadership Workshop Series III (GPSU4200).

GPS students admitted in Medicine Year Three are required to complete satisfactorily GPS Leadership Workshop Series IIA (GPSU3000), GPS Leadership Workshop Series IIB (GPSU4000) and GPS Leadership Workshop Series III (GPSU4200).

GPS students admitted in Medicine Year Four are required to complete satisfactorily GPS Leadership Workshop Series IIB (GPSU4000) and GPS Leadership Workshop Series III (GPSU4200). GPS students who fulfill the requirements of GPS Leadership Workshop Series I (GPSU2000) and GPS Leadership Workshop Series IIA (GPSU3000) are eligible for exemption from Medicine Plus: Exploring Contemporary Medicine (MEDU2000).

Under close supervision of a mentor, GPS students must complete a GPS project within the period from Medicine Year Three or Four until Medicine Year Five. These students are required to submit an end-of-project report no later than the end of Medicine Year Five. GPS students are eligible for exemption from Selected Study Modules (SSMU3000) if they opt for submission of an interim report of the GPS Project by the end of Medicine Year Four.

(3)

GPS students are required to take GPS Internship (a 4 to 6-week duration internship attachment in a local or an overseas institution). GPS Internship is arranged at the latest by the time of Medicine Year Five. GPS students who fulfill the requirement of GPS Internship are eligible for exemption from Clinical Elective (MEDU4410).
