Explanatory Notes

1.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Programme in Mathematical Sciences/Mathematics and Applied Mathematics jointly organized by CUHK and CUHK(SZ) (joint programme) should normally spend four regular terms at CUHK(SZ) during the four years of study, except otherwise specified in 2. below.

2.

Students who join term-time exchange programme must spend at least three regular terms at CUHK(SZ) during the four years of study.

3.

Students enrolled in the joint programme can take substitute/equivalent/alternative courses either at CUHK or CUHK(SZ). The list of substitute/equivalent/alternative courses is available at this link (https://www.zsims.cuhk.edu.hk/en/). Students should not take a course and its substitute/equivalent/alternative course. Should they do so, only one course will be counted towards the fulfillment of the unit requirements. Grades of relevant substitute/equivalent/alternative courses taken at CUHK(SZ) will be transferred to CUHK for the purpose of calculation of GPA, Major GPA and credit units.

4.

All Faculty Package courses, Required Courses, and Elective Courses will be included in the calculation of Major GPA for honors classification.

5.

A student who wishes to transfer to the programmes offered by the Faculty of Science or Faculty of Engineering shall follow the prevailing rules and regulations of the University and obtain prior permission from the School Director through written application. Such applications should be made one month before the commencement of the University’s designated application period for the change of programme. No such application shall be accepted once the application period as announced by the University has commenced. In general, students must apply for a change of programme no later than the third year of attendance of their undergraduate studies.

6.

Students admitted by CUHK will be conferred a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematical Sciences upon completion of all graduation requirements. Students may apply to pursue Ph.D. study under the arrangements of the Articulated B.Sc. – Ph.D. Programme in Mathematical Sciences (ABP), and they must declare the opt-in according to the stipulated procedures by the beginning of the fourth year of attendance. Students are required to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree with honours not lower than Second Class and to satisfy the minimum admission requirements prescribed by the Graduate School and Zhizhen School in order to be eligible to proceed with postgraduate studies, subject to the prevailing University regulations and approval by the relevant authorities. Graduates from the Bachelor’s programmes from CUHK are deemed to have fulfilled the University’s English Language requirements.

7.

Students who wish to pursue Ph.D. study under the ABP should take note of the following:

(i)

For CUHK students who are subsequently admitted to the Ph.D. of the ABP, the 5000-level courses that they complete under this programme will be automatically recognized to fulfill the coursework requirement for the Ph.D. Programme, subject to prevailing guidelines. No application for course and unit exemptions is required.

(ii)

In order to fulfill the graduation requirements for postgraduate study, students must complete a minimum of 9 months of non-local learning/research experience, with at least 3 consecutive months of such experience. A formal term-time exchange programme during undergraduate study, or non-consecutive and substantial non-local learning/research experiences of 4 months or more offered by the University, Colleges, the Faculty of Engineering or Science, Zhizhen School, the Mathematics Department and other relevant programmes may also be considered, subject to the approval of the Division Head

[a]

Either one of the two courses taken to fulfill the Required Courses requirement cannot be used to fulfill the Elective Courses requirement.
